Jonathan Foote is a tinkerer, educator, roboticist, and creative technologist. His kinetic and light works explore perception and interaction using a range of sophisticated electronics, from vintage vacuum tubes to the latest semiconductors and actuators. Jonathan’s research interests include machine learning, audio analysis and retrieval, robotics, multimedia signal processing, distance interaction, and panoramic video. Jonathan has published more than 60 papers in these areas and has received Best Paper Awards at the ACM Multimedia and ACM SIGIR international conferences. Jonathan has been awarded more than 50 US patents.

Jonathan received a BS (Electrical Engineering) and ME (Electrical) degrees from Cornell University, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Brown University. Jonathan did postdoctoral research at Cambridge University in the UK, was a Fulbright Fellow at the Institute of Systems Science (now A*STAR) in Singapore, and was a Senior Research Scientist at FX Palo Alto Laboratory, Inc. Jonathan is currently an adjunct professor in the Interaction Design department at California College for the Arts, a member of the Kinetics and Electronics faculty at The Crucible, and a 2015 Autodesk Artist-in-Residence.
